Three Greek PrePaid GSM SIM cards
.
Panafon
"à la Carte" a PrePaid GSM900 SIM card. The best solution for a visitor to Greece.

The startpackage costs 9000GRD (appr US$30) and contains a SIM card charged with 6000GRD (appr US$20). The package also includes a manual in Greek, PIN and PUK codes.

The card is valid for 6 months after activation/recharging.

Value cheques are available in the amounts of 6000GRD or 12000GRD.

International calls are possible, see price examples below. Receiving and sending SMS works. Voicemail and Call barring are included.

It could very well be a good solution for a visitor to buy an à la Carte card, if you plan to make or receive many calls.

Calls to Customer Service are free. It is biligual, Greek and English.

We have tested this card and it worked well. We can recommend it. When you call and the credit is low, a voice will tell you how many minutes your credit will last. Since everything is in Greek, you will most probably need the help of the shop assistant to activate, configure and recharge your card.

Telestet
"B-free" a PrePaid GSM900 SIM card

The startpackages cost 9000GRD (appr US$30) and contain a SIM card charged with 6000GRD (appr US$20). The packages also includes a manual in Greek, PIN and PUK codes. There are three different types to choose from, Morning, Afternoon and Classic. Morning and Afternoon offers lower prices on domestic calls during a certain period of the day.

The card is valid for 6 months after activation and from 3 to 12 after recharging.

Value cheques are available in the amount of 5000GRD, 10 000GRD or 20 000GRD. When recharging you prolongue the valid period with respectively 3, 6 and 12 month. BUT you can also shorten the valid period!!! Here is an example:

You buy a card and you make very many calls during the first week. You still have about 6 months left and you need to recharge the card. In this case you will loose the remaining 6 months and gain 3 when recharging 5000GRD. You will end up loosing 3 months. You are actually punished for beeing a good customer. A very strange system!!! Prices are sometimes given with, and sometimes without sales taxes, and you can never tell which. Very confusing.

International calls are possible, but the prices are unknown, even to Customer Service!!! Receiving and sending SMS is possible.

Calls to Customer Service are charged fully. It is biligual, Greek and English. You are requested to first give your B-free phone number and the registered name of the owner of the card. When we tested the card they could not answer one single question, not even the price of international calls!!! But we were still charged, noticeably, for the calls, about US$5 per call. When visiting the office in Athens, they could not give us the prices of intenational calls, either!!!

We have tested this card, too and it is more or less a catastrophy. Of course, we can not recommend it. The sound quality was much worse than with other operators. It is hard to understand that Telestet, which is owned buy the Italian company Stet, which also owns TIM in Italy and is part owner of Mobilkom in Austria, accepts such a low quality. TIM is one of the leading companies in the area of PrePaid GSM SIM cards.

CosmOTE
"CosmoKarta" This card is only obtainable in combination with a SIM-locked GSM1800 phone. But there are shops that are willing to split a package, selling only the card .

The phonepackages cost from 39000GRD (appr US$130) to 89000GRD (appr US$300) and contains a GSM1800 phone, a SIM card.

The card is valid for 6 months after activation/recharging.

International calls are possible. Receiving SMS works, but not sending. Voicemail is included.

It is doubtful if it could be profitable for a visitor to buy a CosmoKarta phone package when visiting Greece.

Calls to Customer Service are free. It is biligual, Greek and English.

We have not tested theese packages.
